Henry St. John School Board Scholarship
$934.34
Description
This scholarship is named after Henry St. John, the longest serving school board member in the Marquette Area Public School District, in recognition of his 30 years of service to the district.
Projects developed during Mr. St. John’s time of service as noted in a letter of recognition from 1944 include:
- The acquisition of land and plans for the Graveraet High School
- The establishment of instrumental music in the public schools and the subsequent orchestras and bands
- The introduction of art instruction in the public schools
- The securing of a site for the Athletic Field (Memorial Field) and the construction of the field and stadium.
Members of the current Marquette Area Public Schools Board have generously donated their stipend from one of their board meetings to fund a scholarship, to be awarded to a graduating senior who has participated in student council, or served as a class officer in high school, and shown interest in future participation in public service. It is the board’s hope that this money will be used to help finance the recipient’s next campaign.
