Description

A new Scholarship, called the Elaine Salo Rizzardi and Joseph Rizzardi Memorial Scholarship has been established through the Marquette Area Public Schools Education Foundation. It was created in memory of Elaine Salo Rizzardi. Her recently deceased husband Joseph Rizzardi, directed their estate to support a fund for students of the Marquette Area Public School to honor his wife of 65 years. Elaine passed away in 2015, in Jackson, Michigan where they made their home.

Elaine graduated from Graveraet High School with the class of 1950. While a student, she played viola in the school orchestra. In the years following, she often returned to the Upper Peninsula, to visit the people and landscape that she always considered her roots. She was the daughter of Thomas V. and Helmi Mae Salo of Marquette.

Elaine worked in the newspaper and health care professions. She is remembered as a devoted wife, avid reader, artist, and lover of the outdoors. She was a talented water colorist and oil painter. Elaine also excelled in all kinds of fabric arts, including decorative crafts, knitting, quilting and sewing. Her artistic accomplishments were always appreciated by those she gifted. She and her husband spent many hours raising and training Golden Retrievers, and enjoyed extensive travel in their motor home, always with their Retrievers as companions.

Elaine would be proud to know that deserving Marquette area students will be able to advance their education as the result of this scholarship. They should:
  • Pursue further education at a college, university or other certificate program (including associate degree or apprenticeship at an accredited vocational/technical school or community college).
